Plants of the Atacama Desert
The plants that live in the Atacama Desert have learned to adapt to their set environment very well. They know how to react to the scorching hot days and the freezing cold nights. All the animals have learned to get along with the plants, as have all the plants have learned to get along with the animals.
Flowers
Nolana flower
from the Atacama Desert
These beautiful flowers arise from the ground every year in a variety of colours and range. This phenomenal event takes place in Chiles Atacama Desert. We take water for granted every single day, but when the Atacama Desert gets just 0.004 inches of water this dazzling display forms from the sand and rocks. This event has changed the way I look at deserts forever. This gorgeous carpet of colour arises from the ground from late August until late November/early December.
Cactus are made the way they are to survive under even the worst conditions. Most cactus have spiny or pricaly thorns to protect their softer more delicate skin from intruders. Cactus seem skiny when there hasn't been any resent rainfall, but after it has rained the same cacti can look like a compleatly differance species. This is because they are a plant that stores water. The cacti share their water with other living creatures. The hues can range from a shallow fawn colour to a deep emerald, cacti can also apear in the colour yellow.
